Emma Yang

Emma Yang is 12 years old and a rising 8th grader in New York. She is passionate about computer science and girls and women in STEM. In 2015, Emma won second place in the Technovation Challenge, a global technology entrepreneurship competition for girls and recently named one of New York’s 10 Under 20 Young Innovators to Watch. Her favorite subjects at school are history and science, although she likes all of them in general, much to the confusion and sometimes amusement of most of her classmates. She enjoys being among the group of nerds who understand her like of school and saying “oxygen potassium” instead of OK, as well as making (from her point of view, but apparently not too) hilarious comics in Latin and (ineffectively, but she never admits this) advocates for the use of the Oxford comma.

Emma was born and lived in Hong Kong for ten years, and comes from a family from China, Vietnam, Indonesia. Her favorite foods are virtually anything Chinese, especially dumplings. Emma speaks English, Mandarin and Cantonese natively, is learning French and Latin, and often has polyglot battles with her fellow nerds. Emma plays the piano and the cello, and has performed at Carnegie Hall twice. She also enjoys being an introvert, although most people think she’s an ambivert, and quite the perfectionist. And studying objects moving in one direction for a very, very, very, long time.
